Application period for new radio broadcasting licences completed – with a total of 42 applications

Published 01.08.2018

All licences for analogue radio broadcasting for the new ten-year licence period beginning in January 2020 were available for application.

Frequencies for the Helsinki capital region and for the new metropolitan network that will cover most major cities and around half of the population in Finland aroused the most interest. The applicants included new operators.

After the expiry of the application period, FICORA determines the competent licence authority for each frequency block. FICORA is in charge of the licences for the frequency blocks for which only a single application was submitted. In the case of several applicants, the licence decisions are made by the Government. Also all applications for specialised radio broadcasting are transferred to the Government. FICORA notifies the applicants of such transfers.

Final licence decisions are made simultaneously by FICORA and the Government. FICORA aims to complete the decision process by the end of 2018.
