Finland’s path to becoming a leading 5G country: auction of the 3.5 GHz frequency range opens

Published 26.09.2018

The spectrum auction enables the building of new, high-performance 5 mobile networks in Finland. 5G is a wireless communications platform designed to boost digitalisation and meet the future needs of users in a variety of sectors. The auction, which is organised by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, begins on Wednesday 26 September 2018.

A total of three licences entitling to the use of a 130 MHz frequency band within the 3410-3800 MHz frequency range will be auctioned. The starting bid for the frequency bands is 21 or 23 million euros, depending on the band. The auction is held online.

One enterprise, organisation or association may not be granted more than one licence. The details of the participants of the auction are not public.

Finland is one of the first countries in the world to hold a 5G spectrum auction and to dedicate frequencies to 5G. Finland is the first country in the world to allocate three 130 MHz frequency bands for 5G networks. This allows us to make full use of the benefits of 5G technology, namely its high capacity, short delays and low energy consumption.

There have been three previous spectrum auctions in Finland. The 2.5 GHz frequency range was auctioned in 2008, while the 800 MHz auction was held in 2013 and the 700 MHz auction in 2016.

This auction is a concrete step towards the most advanced digital society in the world: Finland needs efficient, secure and increasingly faster communications connections to enable new services. One of FICORA’s key performance targets is to support Finland in becoming the 5G technology leader and thereby ensure access to advanced electronic services for every member of society.
